Finally Found An Answer

i used all available time looking for the answer, which was in a link in a footnote on my dashboard.  c and a names have to be created and registered. 
now, in the best customer-centric world, that ought to have been right up there with the initial instructions, once I clicked on "get my own domain".  not all people are born with the knowledge that they need to register c and a names.  it seems to be a basic always-necessary step in the process. 
that will have to wait for later, perhaps even tomorrow.
